Learn together

Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival, Duānwǔ Jié) is a traditional festival over 2000 years old in China. A memorial ceremony commemorates the death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan (c.340-278 BC), as well as offers sacrifices to remove the evil spirits before formally entering summer. The festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, the festival is on June 25th.

Ceremonies are combined with sporting events such as dragon boat racing 赛龙舟 (sài lóngzhōu)  and willow shooting; feasts of sticky rice dumpling 粽子 (zòngzi) and ruby sulphur wine; and folk entertainments of wearing scented sachet香包 ( Xiāng bāo), folk opera, and unicorn dances.

The Dargon Boat Festival is listed as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009.

DIY a scented bag 香包

A scented sachet 香包 ( Xiāng bāo,香 fragrance包 sachet, bag  ) is a small cloth bag filled with fragrant herbage. It is recorded that ancient Chinese used to carry a medicine bag while hunting to drive out poisonous insects.

Step 1-Materials: a piece of cloth, sewing materials, herbs (such as lavender, rose petals, cloves,) or scented powder;

Step 2-Sewing & stuffing:  This is not only girls stuff!   Make small bag, choose any form you like, then stuff it with the scented natural materials;

Step 3-share:  on the day of Dragon Boat Festival, offer to your family and friends, or hang near window. It is supposed to bring blessing of health and serenity !
